Beautiful Loudoun County

Along with its historic towns and villages, Loudoun County is known for scenic horse and wine country and spectacular vistas.  Situated along the Potomac River in northern Virginia just 35 miles from Washington DC, Loudoun boasts more than a dozen award-winning wineries, significant heritage sites, championship golf courses, unique shopping experiences, soothing and relaxing spas, supurb dining, elegant hotels and comfortable, relaxing B&Bs and Inns.

Loudoun County was established in 1757 and is named for John Campbell, Fourth Earl of Loudoun and Governer of Virginia from 1756-59.  Western settlement began in the 1720s and 1730s with Quakers, Scots-Irish, Germans and others moving south from Pennsylvania and Maryland and by English and African slaves moving upriver from Tidewater.

Managing Growth and Preservation

In 2008, Loudoun was the fastest growth county for counties with population of 250,000 residents or more.  Loudoun and nearby areas support well-paying jobs and ranks very high in average household income.  Passionate debate in recent years has centered on preserving the beautiful countrysides and views in Loudoun's western and northern regions.  Fortunately, Loudoun's slower-growth advocates have worked hard to preserve our views and open areas!
